October home maintenance: SoCal edition

October may technically be fall, but Southern California doesn't always get the memo.

While other parts of the country are pulling out sweaters and preparing for freezing temperatures, we can still be running the AC, watering the yard, and watching the forecast for another round of 90-degree days. Add Santa Ana winds, shorter daylight hours, and the hope that rain will eventually make an appearance, and October brings its own home maintenance checklist around here.

Here are five things worth tackling this month.

Clear around your AC condenser

Don't retire the AC just yet.

After working hard all summer, your outdoor condenser may be surrounded by dust, leaves, and overgrown landscaping. Clear away debris and trim vegetation around the unit so air can move freely.

While you're outside, take a quick look at the unit itself. If something sounds unusual, airflow inside the house seems weak, or the system is struggling to keep up during our latest heat wave, it's better to address it now than discover a problem on the hottest afternoon of the month.

Check outdoor drains

We know. Rain? In Southern California? Eventually.

October is a good time to clear yard drains, patio drains, driveway drains, and drainage channels before the first meaningful storm catches everyone by surprise.

Remove leaves, dirt, and other debris, and make sure water has a clear path away from the house. Ten minutes now beats standing outside in the rain trying to figure out why the patio suddenly has a swimming pool.

Inspect outdoor lighting

The temperatures may still feel like summer, but the sun definitely knows it's fall.

With daylight hours getting shorter, exterior lighting becomes more important. Walk around your property after dark and check porch lights, pathways, side yards, driveway lighting, and motion sensors.

Replace burned-out bulbs, clean dirty fixtures, and make sure darker areas around entrances and walkways are properly illuminated. It's a small maintenance task that can improve both visibility and security.

Give your irrigation system a checkup

Your sprinklers and drip lines have been putting in work all summer, so give the entire system a quick inspection.

Run each irrigation zone individually and watch for broken or misaligned sprinkler heads, clogged emitters, leaking lines, and water spraying onto sidewalks or driveways instead of your landscaping.

As temperatures eventually cool, you may be able to reduce your watering schedule—but don't make the adjustment based on the calendar alone. Southern California can still deliver plenty of heat in October, so pay attention to actual weather conditions and what your landscape needs.

Get ready for Santa Ana winds

Ah, yes. Our other fall tradition.

Before the Santa Anas start howling, walk around the exterior of your home and look for anything that could become a problem when the wind picks up. Secure patio umbrellas, lightweight furniture, planters, and outdoor décor. Check gates and fencing, and remove dead or damaged branches that could come down in strong winds.

It's also a good opportunity to clear dry leaves and vegetation that have accumulated around the property during the summer months.

A little October maintenance goes a long way

Southern California fall may not come with freezing temperatures and snow prep, but our homes still have to transition from one season to the next.

A few small jobs now can help keep your home comfortable through lingering heat, ready for windy weather, and prepared whenever our first real rain finally decides to show up.

And if October still feels suspiciously like August?

Welcome to fall in Southern California. 😎
